Sen. Chuck Grassley: “No Low” Dems Won’t Stoop To Destroy a Court Nominee
In remarks on the opening day of Amy Coney Barrett’s Supreme Court confirmation hearing, Senate Judiciary Committee Republican Chuck Grassley said that Democrats would sink to any level necessary to smear a Supreme Court nominee they want to stop. With the media and left-wing pundits already going after Barrett as some kind of religious extremist, Grassley’s words are more than a prediction – they are a survey of the current political landscape. And, of course, this should come as no surprise to anyone; as Grassley noted Monday, we’ve seen it all go down before.
“Democrats and their leftist allies have also shown that there is no low that they won’t stoop to in their crusade to tarnish a nominee,” Grassley said. “And I saw it all as chairman of this committee when Kavanaugh came up.”
Exactly. It will be a wonder if Barrett’s hearing get quite THAT ugly, if only because it’s hard to even imagine how Democrats could sink that low again. Yes, it will be nasty to watch Kamala Harris, Amy Klobuchar, and other committee Democrats throw their religion-tainted stones at Barrett, but we don’t expect them to roll out some high school peer of Barrett’s to sling unsubstantiated accusations of sexual assault.
Then again, knowing these cretins, nothing would shock us.
“Some of my colleagues may once again try to misrepresent and outright disparage Judge Barrett’s religious beliefs and affiliations. In 2017 they suggested Judge Barrett was too Catholic to be a judge. One senator asked whether she considered herself an Orthodox Catholic,” Grassley said.
He also reminded the committee of Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s words at that earlier hearing: “The dogma lives loudly within you, and that’s of concern.”
Democrats have been warned by Joe Biden to swerve away from direct questions about Barrett’s religious beliefs, but that won’t keep them from hinting around the edges. They went after Kavanaugh with all the zeal of a pitchfork mob, and they are sure to use a similar playbook this time around. Then, as now, they had very little hope of actually derailing the nomination. At best, they hoped they could crush Kavanaugh’s spirits to the point that he would voluntarily drop out of contention. When he fought back instead, they cast his willingness to do so as a sign of his unfitness for the court.
Grassley, anticipating all of this, said he didn’t want to hear attacks on Barrett’s faith.
“Let me remind everyone that Article 1 clearly prohibits religious tests for serving in public office,” Grassley said. “Judge, you will no doubt be asked how you will rule on questions and issues and whether the case was correctly decided. I expect that you will follow the example of Justice Ginsburg, a nominee should offer no forecast, no hints of how he or she will vote because that is the role of a judge. That’s the place of a judge in our system of government. Unbiased, fiercely independent. Faithful to the rule of law and a steadfast defender of the Constitution.”
Sad to say, that’s not what Democrats want in a Supreme Court justice. Not at all.
