White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer came to the podium for the first time on Saturday, and he came with a message for the national news media.
“Yesterday, at a time when our nation and the world watched the peaceful transition of power – and as the president said, the transfer and balance of power from Washington to the citizens of the United States – some members of the media were engaged in deliberately false reporting,” Spicer said.
Spicer was particularly irate at media organizations who publicized photographs that appeared to show larger crowds for Barack Obama’s inauguration in 2009 than those gathered to see Trump take the oath of office.
“Photographs of the inaugural proceeding were intentionally framed in a way in one particular tweet to minimize the enormous support that had gathered on the National Mall,” Spicer said.
He said that security obstacles and floor coverings installed to protect the grass conspired to make the turnout seem small.
“This was the largest audience to ever witness an inauguration – period,” Spicer said. “Both in person and around the globe. These attempts to lessen enthusiasm of the inauguration are shameful and wrong.”
Spicer said that for as much as liberal reporters liked to talk about their obligation to keep Trump in line, it was just as important for Trump to point out the media’s dishonesty.
“There’s been a lot of talk in the media about responsibility to hold Donald Trump accountable, and I am here to tell you that it goes two ways,” he said. “We’re going to hold the press accountable as well.”
And we’re off!
The political press – filled with liberals from top to bottom – sees Trump as a threat to their monopoly on the truth. We tell the American people what to believe! If the President of the United States wants to talk to the country, he’ll do it through us! He’s not going to bypass the glorious Fourth Estate, damn it!
When 17 Republicans of varying strength jumped into the race a year and a half ago, the media thought they had finally done it. With eight years of lies, they had enshrined Barack Obama as history’s greatest president and they had destroyed conservative America in the process. The Democratic Party would rule the U.S. for a generation, and there was nothing the GOP could do about it.
Now their dreams of a socialist America are coming undone, and they are terrified of a citizenry that is slowly but surely waking up to the fiction they’ve been served for nearly a decade. This is nothing less than a fight for the soul of our country.
And it’s going to get dirty.
