State Dept. Investigators Examining Clinton Foundation
Back in January, the honesty-challenged Hillary Clinton denied reports that the FBI was investigating a link between her Clinton Foundation charity and her work at the State Department. At the time, she dismissed the allegation as “unsourced” and “irresponsible” reporting on the part of Fox News. Unfortunately for the erstwhile secretary of state, the truth has a way of coming out.
A new report from the Washington Post confirms that State Department investigators sent a subpoena to the Foundation last year, demanding to see any documents related to charity projects that should have been presented to the federal government for approval when Clinton was serving under Obama. This subpoena also requested records relating to Clinton’s top aide, Huma Abedin, who at one point held jobs at both the State Department and the Clinton Foundation.
As it is with everything Clinton, there is only smoke right now. No one close to the investigation, either anonymously or not, has confirmed that she is the subject of the inquiry. At the same time, though, even voters who like Clinton have to wonder how much they can tolerate. Either she is the most unfairly-persecuted politician in American history or she was engaged in wrongdoing for much of her recent career. Even if we’re going to give her the benefit of the doubt, do we want someone this unlucky to be president of the United States?
Well, of course, any sensible person can see that luck has nothing to do with it. The Clinton family has plenty of it, and it all flows their way. How else could this scandalous, deceitful couple continue to enjoy mainstream success after all the American people have learned about them? Is it just because people have made an emotional connection between Bill’s presidency and a booming economy? Do they understand that Bill brought about that economic upturn by abandoning liberal principles, not embracing them? Newt Gingrich had more to do with the economic boom of the 1990s than Slick Willie. And even if he didn’t, what makes anyone think that Hillary would be a president in the model of her husband? She spends much more time blowing smoke up Obama’s ass than promising a return to the glory days of Bill’s administration.
Beyond politics and policies and parties, we should at least demand that our next president be someone of decent moral character. That doesn’t mean they have to be a puritan, but it should mean that we don’t elect a criminal to the highest office in the land. And whether it is ever proven in court or not, Hillary Clinton is a criminal.
