Student Activists Tear Down Confederate Statue in North Carolina
You thought the left had given up the fight against the Confederacy? Think again, because a group of protesters at the University of North Carolina haven’t yet figured out that the Civil War is over. They took to the campus streets on Monday to topple a statue of Silent Sam, which stands as a memorial to Confederate soldiers who were killed during America’s bloodiest war. The protesters yanked the statue down with a rope and then buried it in dirt and mud, just to make sure that everyone got the point. Said point being: Modern day social justice warriors are truly, actually crazy.
“Tonight’s actions were dangerous, and we are very fortunate that no one was injured,” the university said in a statement. “We are investigating the vandalism and assessing the full extent of the damage.”
Oh please, you’re not going to do anything to punish these kids. This is America, circa 2018, and if you’re a leftist college student fighting the patriarchy/fascist state/white supremacist leadership/heteronormative cisgender tyranny, you get a free pass to do whatever the hell you want to do. No school wants to be seen coming down on “progressive” students, thus ensuring that this problem will only get worse going into the future.
The particular animus against this specific statue was apparently generated – or at least energized – by a student named Maya Little, who has been calling for its removal since last year. In an interview last November, Little said the school was spending too much money “to maintain a statue that glorifies the enslavement of my ancestors. That was dedicated by a man who took pleasure in beating a black woman on our campus, that was erected by a group who praised the KKK as protectors of white womanhood.”
Earlier this year, Little splashed the Silent Sam statue with a mixture of red ink and her own blood, an incident for which she faces expulsion and criminal charges.
Hopefully we’re wrong about the schools/authorities letting leftists get away with property damage as long as it is done in furtherance of the progressive cause. Maybe there is still some sanity left in this country and the people responsible for this ridiculous crime will be brought to justice. There’s a place for reasonable people to debate whether or not these statues should remain, but there is no place for activists to take matters into their own hands.
Frankly, we fail to see how honoring the dead makes any statement in support of slavery, but this wouldn’t be the first time we’ve lacked the imagination to understand the left.
