Having been given the opportunity of a generation to clean up their act after the election of Donald Trump in 2016, the mainstream media has instead gone headlong in the other direction, actually getting worse with every successive year of Trump’s presidency. From the Russia hoax to impeachment and everything in between, the media has used the Trump Era to grow so distant from objectivity, journalism, and factual reporting that it is now the least-trusted institution in America.
But as long as the clicks keep coming and the ratings keep soaring – people love their drama – they’re not going to reform. Thus we get years like this one, where the fake news was relentless, pathetic, and actively dangerous.
Here are the three worst.
The Public Shaming of the Covington Catholic Kids
Nick Sandmann, the teenager who was turned into a national pariah after having the audacity to simultaneously wear a MAGA hat and smirk at an unhinged Indian, deserves whatever lawsuit money he has coming to him. His lawyers have filed suits against the Washington Post, CNN, and other media outlets, and while we’re not optimistic about how those cases will turn out, boy, those media companies should really be ashamed of themselves and held to account.
Virtually every aspect of this story was misreported within the first 24 hours, and the media did plenty to fan the flames of hatred raging against this 16-year-old kid. It was a pathetic, sad thing to watch, and the fact that no one lost their jobs over this debacle is a sign of just how crooked this industry is.
The Literally-Incredible Story of Jussie Smollett
Only a month after the media embarrassed itself demonizing a kid who deserved better, they turned around and made an extremely similar mistake in their coverage of “Empire” star Jussie Smollett and his supposed attack in the streets of Chicago. And by mistake, we mean “calculated act of evil.”
The media was only-too-ready to believe Smollett’s literally-unbelievable story – that he’d been attacked and brutalized by a couple of MAGA-hat wearing hillbillies…who recognized him from the television show?! Yes, there’s no show racist rednecks like more than Fox’s story of a black rap mogul and his scheming son. Makes perfect sense. As with the Covington case, no media outlet has properly apologized for their idiotic coverage of the Smollett story, which (of course) turned out to be wholly fictional.
The Quid Pro Quo That Wasn’t
Only a few short months after their Russia hoax collapsed under the weight of the Mueller report (and the subsequent, embarrassing testimony), the media proved that they had learned absolutely nothing. Once again, they were more than willing to throw caution to the wind and follow the Democratic Party down another rabbit hole of lies, exaggerations, and nonsense. Coverage of the Ukraine non-scandal has taken us to another level of fake newsery, and it has helped drive the Democrats all the way to the silliest impeachment in U.S. history.
It has not, however, moved public opinion in the direction the left wants. Which says everything you need to know about how much trust the media has lost. When you peddle garbage for years, eventually people are going to start smelling it. It looks like we’ve reached that point. Finally.
