The last month has seen the United States commit 3,000 ground troops to West Africa in an attempt to stop the spread of Ebola. It has seen Obama present a strategy to the American people for destroying ISIS in Iraq and Syria with airstrikes and armed rebels on the ground. The question no liberal seems to be able to answer is why? Why is America expected to do these things? Yes, we have (a little) help, but let’s face it. Like Austin Powers might say, that’s not their bag, baby. We have long been the policemen of the world; now we’re going to be the doctors of the world as well.
And liberals, though they want us to take action as much as anyone, can’t explain why. Because it has long been their primary trumpeting point that there’s nothing special about America. We’re a young, stupid country with awful culture. A nest of xenophobia and racism and oppression. We would be better off if we did away with capitalism and replaced it with an economy based on failed socialist ideologies. Few of them go as far as to suggest we do away with the Constitution, but they certainly wouldn’t mind scratching some parts out with a Sharpie.
What they can’t see – what they refuse to see – is that America is called upon to save the world precisely because of the things they hate about us. When they look at the fact that America holds 50% of the world’s wealth, it makes them shiver with disgust. Just look at us. Over here with our Bibles and our air conditioning and our AR-15s. It’s an abomination. But we didn’t get to amass that much of the world’s wealth by following the rules. The founding fathers forged their own path, and in doing so happened to create the greatest country in the history of human civilization.
They don’t want to believe it. They think that when we come to the rescue of the Iraqi people, we’re merely repaying the world for the travesties we’ve inflicted. Yet time and again, the world comes to us when the you-know-what hits the fan. As soon as he was elected, Obama went on what became known as the Apology Tour. He couldn’t wait to express how sorry he was for the last eight years of President Bush. They gave the guy a Nobel Prize just for surmising that America needed to mind its own business.
But what would happen if America really did mind its own business? Well, it would certainly mean a sealed border. What’s the point of letting all those immigrants in if we’re going to become strict isolationists? It would mean we would have to ramp up homeland security tremendously, because we couldn’t go out there and kill terrorists in their respective countries. It would mean that countless economies around the world would simply collapse without the trillions of dollars in aid the U.S. provides.
The vision of a world without American exceptionalism is a dark one. We’re the world’s police, doctors, and bank because there’s no one else to step up! And it’s because conservatives understand what makes America great that we despise what liberals are doing to the country. We despise what they’ve done to our traditions, what they’ve done to our economy, and what they want to do to our freedoms. We have no choice but to call out their lies whenever we get the chance.
America is special. America is exceptional. America, sorry to say it, is simply better.
