More than 40,000 people have signed an online petition to let attendees of July’s Republican National Convention carry firearms. Though there are reasons to believe that the petition is authored by a liberal anti-gunner hoping to make a point, it seems that thousands of pro-gun patriots have taken the bait. Or perhaps not. When it comes to these online petitions, you never really know what you’re looking at or who these people are. No major gun organizations, certainly, have expressed any support for the cause.
“Without the right to protect themselves, those at the Quicken Loans Arena will be sitting ducks, utterly helpless against evil-doers, criminals or others who wish to threaten the American way of life,” says the anonymous petitioner.
Yeah, that sounds like satire.
But the insincerity of the original creator doesn’t automatically discredit the idea itself. It has been the position of the NRA, most pro-gun conservatives, and the Republican presidential candidates that “gun-free zones” are a danger to everyday Americans. According to experts, banning guns in a school, a government building, or an arena leaves citizens at the mercy of psychopaths and terrorists. Doesn’t it stand to reason that the Republican National Convention, of all places, should abide by the party’s own philosophy?
Well, no. Not really.
That’s undoubtedly what the creator of this petition wants to argue. They want to hold a mirror up to Republicans and show them their own hypocrisy. Hey, if you’re so opposed to gun-free zones, put your money where your mouth is!
But there’s a significant difference here. Liberals don’t do so well with nuance, but this should be easy enough for even an Obama supporter to understand. The Quicken Loans Arena will be flooded with gun-toting Secret Service officers, police, and security officials. If there is an attack of any kind, the people inside the arena will not have to wait until law enforcement can get there. The good guys with guns…are already in place. They have the training. The arena is secure in a way that it would never be with an open-carry policy alone.
That’s a much different scenario than the one that unfolded at that movie theater in Aurora, Colorado. Quite different from the one that played out at the Oregon community college last year. In those (and many other) mass shootings, there were no cops around. No well-trained security officers. The killers were literally the only ones around who were armed.
This petition aims to make a point. And it does. It proves once again that liberals lack the brainpower to understand the Second Amendment.
