Jessica Smartt Gullion, writing in Newsweek, has come up with what could go down in history as the most idiotic argument against campus carry ever made. According to Gullion, a professor at Texas Woman’s University, letting college students carry guns could lead to “grade inflation.”
“Texas college professors may soon face a dilemma between upholding professional ethics and protecting their lives,” she writes, referring to a bill in the Texas legislature that would permit college students to keep their guns with them on campus. “With this proposed law, a question coming up for many academics is whether they would be forced to give A grades to undeserving students, just so they can avoid being shot.”
Really? There have been some outrageous arguments against campus carry (and concealed carry in general), but this one is further along the insanity spectrum than most. Carried to its logical conclusion, waiters should be living in constant fear that their patrons will pull a gun on them if they don’t like what’s written on the bill. A manager should cringe every time he has to discipline an employee. Who knows when someone will pull out a gun and say, “Nah, it’s not going to be the way you want it to be.”
These liberals have this strange idea of our college campuses turning into the wild west upon passage of concealed carry, with students running around in armed gangs, enforcing their will on the population. The author herself seems unable to realize the stupidity of her own argument. After running through a handful of cases where teachers were shot by students, she admits that “in each of these states, carrying handguns on campus was illegal at the time of the shooting.” But even after writing it in black and white, she can’t see the irony.
Is allowing campus carry going to cut down on instances of rape, robbery, and other acts of violence? Probably not. But the argument that it will make our campuses worse is not based on any objective analysis. As proven here, anti-gun activists are driven not by facts but by emotion. By dreaming up fantastical scenarios where professors can no longer do their jobs because they are under constant threat of death, they are appealing to the heart and hoping to bypass the brain. It’s unfortunate that an “academic” would take this approach, but hey, she knows what works.
The truth is that the anti-gun crowd has to use these tactics because they have nothing else. They have successfully created a hysteria around guns based on lies, sensationalism, and horror stories. But then, when you think about it, you realize this is the MO for the left regardless of the issue at hand. If they perceive a chance to slash our freedoms, expand the government, and turn this country into something closer to the socialist European countries they adore, they will use any strategy it takes.
Shame on them, and shame on anyone who buys into their anti-American propaganda.
