It wasn’t long ago that “liberal” was one of the easiest go-to insults for the political left in this country. It was a nice catch-all that undermined the Democrats and their soft little “progressive” label that didn’t really get to the heart of their tax-and-spend philosophy.
If there was a problem with the word, it was that it meant something slightly different on American shores than it does around the world and in academic circles. In that context, we’re all liberals in the West – all of us in favor of such (big L) liberal ideas as freedom, individual destiny, capitalism, the arts, and so on.
And if we’re talking about Big-L Liberalism – or what the extreme left in the U.S. now handily derides as “neoliberalism” – today’s antifa-loving, socialism-craving, anti-free speech cretinous leftists don’t deserve the label. Because they are anything BUT liberals in the classic definition of the word. They loathe freedom. They are, in any reasonable sense of the word, oppressive fascists who want to choke out any viewpoint other than theirs, and they are increasingly willing to use violence to do so.
From The Hill:
“The justification [of the use of violence] is that Nazi ideology at its very core is founded on violence and on wielding power by any means,” said Mike Isaacson, who is one of the founders of Smash Racism D.C., an antifa organization in Washington.
Isaacson is unequivocal in his defense of violence as a legitimate tool to combat the creeping threat of what he deems authoritarianism.
“There is the question of whether these people should feel safe organizing as Nazis in public, and I don’t think they should,” said Isaacson.
“I don’t think anyone should think that someone who is intent on politically organizing for the sake of creating a state-sponsored genocide — I don’t think is something that we should protect.”
In other words, he doesn’t believe in free speech and he DOES believe in using violence to shut it down. Today, he’s talking about “Nazis.” Tomorrow…who knows? Already, these leftists have a very loose definition of “Nazis” that can be extended from David Duke to Ben Shapiro to Ann Coulter and all the way to Donald Trump. And if you gave them the ability to shut down those people, they would soon find “fascism” in the beliefs of Lindsey Graham, George Will, Jeb Bush, and John McCain. Because you literally can’t be “far left” enough to satisfy these lunatics without undergoing a lobotomy.
We can hope that this brief foray into dark Communism is a flash-in-the-pan trend that will die out as soon as it came into being, but we’re not overly optimistic. Anti-freedom concepts like safe spaces and statue-toppling are going mainstream, and we’re already seeing the center-left moving steadily and surely in the wrong direction. Like a frog being slowly boiled to death, we may not realize it’s too late to save this country until it really is too late.
