Triggered Democrat Wants to Ban the State of the Union Address
Wow, we’ve seen butthurt Democrats before, but this is really extraordinary. Rep. Adam Smith (D-WA) was apparently so triggered by Donald Trump’s magnificent State of the Union speech…that he wants to ban the event altogether. In a House Armed Services Committee hearing on Tuesday, the Washington Democrat said that presidents spent too much time at the lectern delivering promises they could not possibly keep.
“The State of the Union address promised more money than I can possibly imagine,” Smith said in his opening statement on the Pentagon’s budget. “And as a side note, I think we ought to ban the State of the Union address, and I say that for Democrats and Republicans alike.”
Right, but we can’t help but notice that you didn’t bring this up when your guy was in the White House.
“The main thing that it does is it gives the executive a chance to stand up there and promise things that are absolutely, utterly, and completely impossible to deliver,” Smith said. “And then the American public comes to expect it, and rightfully gets a little bit irritated when magic doesn’t make it happen, and again that’s bipartisan. Every State of the Union address I have seen since I’ve been here, I’ve walked out of there thinking, ‘We don’t have that money. What is he talking about?’”
To be fair, he makes a decent point in the abstract. Presidential “promises” at the State of the Union can be taken with a grain of salt, as anyone watching has figured out by now.
On the other hand, if you’re going to ban the SOTU for such a reason, then we might as well ban all campaign ads and rallies as well. Or perhaps Smith thinks that politicians always tell the truth about all the wonderful change they’re going to bring to Washington D.C. when they get elected! The American people know what’s up. It’s not a problem unless you want to make it a problem.
And they only want to make it a problem because they despise Donald Trump.
