With House Speaker Nancy Pelosi still withholding articles of impeachment from the Republican-controlled Senate indefinitely, President Trump tweeted Thursday that Pelosi and her House Democrats plainly lied to the American people about the urgency of bringing impeachment up for a vote so quickly.
“The Radical Left, Do Nothing Democrats said they wanted to RUSH everything through to the Senate because ‘President Trump is a threat to National Security’ (they are vicious, will say anything!), but now they don’t want to go fast anymore, they want to go very slowly. Liars!” Trump tweeted.
Pelosi is said to believe that by withholding the articles of impeachment from the Senate, she can pressure Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell into making concessions to the Democrats – or, as she puts it, ensure a “fair trial.” But in remarks to Fox News on Thursday morning, a former deputy assistant to President George W. Bush said that the logic behind Pelosi’s gambit made no sense.
“Mitch McConnell did not nose his way into the impeachment process in the House and she has no standing to do that in the Senate,” said Brad Blakeman. “I think the longer she delays, the worse it gets for them because remember their argument was, this president is such a danger he must be removed for the good of the republic.
“If she doesn’t want to bring the charges to the Senate, then, in fact, he hasn’t been impeached, because the impeachment process means that once the vote is taken in the House it must be filed in the Senate in order for the Senate to take up their responsibility,” he continued. “So, if they don’t consummate their vote by the filing of charges against the president in the Senate, then, in fact, I believe, as many scholars do, that the man has not been impeached.”
That won’t stop Democrats from claiming that he’s been impeached, of course. But if you impeach a president and nothing changes…er, does it make a sound?
We may have our Zen riddles mixed up, but we’re not nearly as confused as Pelosi. She has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that she’s nowhere near the political mastermind that the media would have us believe. Pursuing impeachment was the blunder of the 21st century, and it has all-but-guaranteed that Trump will be reelected in November. Whether or not she sends it over to the Senate, Trump will not be removed from office. And whether she gets a “fair trial” in the Senate or not hardly matters, because anyone even vaguely interested in this process has already heard the evidence. Indeed, anyone who read the transcript of Trump’s call with Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky has seen all the evidence that actually matters.
But this was never about evidence, and it was certainly never about Ukraine military aid. This was always about – as Rashida Tlaib put it so elegantly – going in and “impeaching the motherf’er.”
Well, they did it. Now they can live with the consequences.
