In their story reporting their new poll on President Trump’s approval ratings, NBC has a brilliant quote from Democratic pollster Fred Yang: “The more Trump gets criticized by the media, the more his base seems to rally behind him.”
Gee, ya think?
It’s pretty sad that it’s taken three years for political pollsters to finally reach this conclusion, but then, no one accused those who work in Washington of being the sharpest knives in America’s drawer. And we’re sure, even after realizing that their twin manufactured scandals – the family separation crisis and the Helsinki summit – did absolutely nothing to hurt President Trump’s standing with the voters, the media will change nothing about the way they cover this White House. Scratch that, we’re sure that they will only double down on the fake, biased news stream. At this rate, President Trump will finish up his first term as the most popular president in American history. Keep it up, Fake News!
Truth be told, Yang actually understated the phenomenon going on right now with Trump’s popularity. It’s not just that these two media-driven scandals haven’t hurt Trump with his base; it’s that they have apparently bounced off him so enormously that he’s more popular than ever. The NBC/WSJ poll shows that the president’s job approval rating now stands at 45% among registered voters, which is up a percentage point from June.
Hmm, maybe the majority of Americans believe that the president SHOULD enforce immigration law?
Maybe the majority of Americans would LIKE to avoid a hostile, escalating conflict with Russia?
Or maybe most Americans are just getting sick of this media and their tired, neverending war against Donald Trump – a war that has less to do with facts every single day.
For Americans who don’t stray from mainstream news coverage, it must be nearly impossible to see through the fog of bias and come to a well-rounded understanding of what’s actually going on in Washington. When you think about it that way, it’s almost beyond belief that Trump’s poll numbers are hovering near 50%. We know that a lot of Americans are now getting their news from Fox and other alternative outlets, but just think about what Trump has to overcome in terms of the press. It is nothing short of a colossal failure on the part of the mainstream media that they cannot take this president down. That is, after all, their sworn mission, as twisted as it may be.
But the worse the media gets in terms of bias, the more Americans distrust what they have to say about this administration. You can only cry wolf (or, in this case, “Nazi”) so many times before people tune out. And when you tune out and just look at the facts – a roaring economy, a submissive North Korea, an America that is, at the end of the day, still doing just fine – you realize that Trump is actually doing a hell of a job. THAT accounts for his rising approval numbers.
Unfortunately for the likes of NBC, CNN, The New York Times, and the rest, Americans are just a little bit smarter than they thought.
