Trump’s Revenge: President Endorses Jeff Sessions’ Challenger
When former Attorney General Jeff Sessions jumped into the race for his old Alabama Senate seat last year, he did so with a video that made only one thing perfectly clear: He was a MAGA man all the way, and a vote for him would be a vote to support President Donald Trump.
The reason for the pleading tone was obvious. Sessions was the first lawmaker to come out to publicly endorse Trump in 2016, but his tenure at the Justice Department was a disaster for his relationship with the president. By recusing himself from the 2016 election investigation, Sessions left the door open for Rod Rosenstein and Special Counsel Robert Mueller – a two year probe that clouded the White House in darkness…until Trump’s eventual and complete exoneration.
To say that there is bad blood between Trump and Sessions is to put it mildly. Could Sessions, even at his most obsequious and apologetic, convince Trump to get behind his Senate campaign?
Nope.
Sessions is headed for a runoff primary election with former Auburn University football coach Tommy Tuberville, with both of them hoping to secure the Republican nomination. Trump finally weighed in on the race on Tuesday, throwing his support fully behind Sessions’ opponent.
“Tommy Tuberville (@TTuberville) is running for the U.S. Senate from the Great State of Alabama,” Trump tweeted. “Tommy was a terrific head football coach at Auburn University. He is a REAL LEADER who will never let MAGA/KAG, or our Country, down! Tommy will protect your Second Amendment (which is under siege), is strong on Crime and the Border, and truly LOVES our Military and our Vets. He will be a great Senator for the people of Alabama. Coach Tommy Tuberville, a winner, has my Complete and Total Endorsement. I love Alabama!”
Trump’s endorsement doesn’t come as much of a surprise, of course, seeing as how he has publicly disparaged Sessions on a number of occasions. But it could prove to be a decisive and disabling blow, coming only three weeks before voters head to the polls to determine which of these men will go up against Democrat Doug Jones in November.
“Looking forward to helping you drain the swamp and #KAG!” Tuberville tweeted in response to the president’s endorsement.
What’s the old saying about revenge served cold?
