On Monday, it was reported that President Donald Trump told congressional leaders that he had only lost the popular vote because 3 to 5 million illegal immigrants cast their ballots for Hillary Clinton in defiance of federal law. This is not a new claim for the president, who said in November that he had won the popular vote, “if you deduct the millions of people who voted illegally.
At the podium on Tuesday, White House press secretary Sean Spicer said Trump was not backing down from his claims.
“The president does believe that,” Spicer said. “I think he has stated his concerns of voter fraud and people voting illegally during the campaign based on studies and evidence people have presented to him.”
The claim puts a small rift between Trump and top Republicans. Asked by reporters if he supported Trump’s theory, House Speaker Paul Ryan said, “I’ve already commented on that – I’ve seen no evidence to that effect.”
GOP Rep. Charlie Dent of Pennsylvania also criticized Trump for maintaining the unproven claim. “The election is over,” he said. “He won fair and square. He needs to get to the serious business of governing.”
Trump can, of course, govern and make remarks about the election at the same time, but we can’t see the need. Like Dent said, he won the election. It’s in the history books. Nothing more needs to be proven.
The left is going to use any tool they can to delegitimize his election, but that doesn’t mean Trump needs to defend himself against every smear. Let them blather on about Russia, the popular vote, the FBI director, and anything else that makes them feel better about their disastrous failure. What difference does it make?
When it comes to the media, we understand and sympathize with Trump’s frustrations. The left is out of control. But he’s only giving them more power by snapping back at every little piece of criticism that comes his way. We have bigger fish to fry. Let the media worry about Trump’s popularity or lack thereof; Trump should focus on the job in front of him.
If he does that, he’ll win the next election in a landslide that not even the liberal media will be able to deny.
