On Monday, President Trump stirred up another hornet’s nest as only he can, trolling the mainstream media with one of his amusing tweets.
“We should have a contest as to which of the networks, plus CNN and not including Fox, is the most dishonest, corrupt, and/or distorted in its political coverage of your favorite President (me),” he wrote. “They are all bad. Winner to receive the FAKE NEWS TROPHY!”
As far as trollbait goes, this is about as obvious as it gets…and yet many media stars just couldn’t resist the temptation. Jake Tapper responded with some statistics from the Washington Post about all of Trump’s supposed “falsehoods.” Actor Elijah Wood said Trump was “presumptuous” for assuming that he was everyone’s favorite president. And then there were the really nasty retorts, from people like CNN’s Ana Navarro, who wrote: “We should have a contest as to which of the US Presidents, plus his children, in-laws and staff, is the most dishonest, corrupt, and/or distorted in their dealings w/an international foe committed to attacking US democracy.”
No one has a sense of humor anymore!
But hey, if the media is going to take this little jab so seriously, then maybe we should too! We should actually try to determine which of the networks deserves Ye Olde FAKE NEWS TROPHY. There are so many excellent contenders.
In February, CBS was the only network to pick up a blatantly fake AP news story reporting that President Trump was mobilizing some 100,000 National Guard troops to round up millions of illegal immigrants. The AP eventually corrected its story, which was utterly misleading in its details and its veracity, but we don’t recall CBS ever coming back to revise their reporting.
In May, NBC News was all too eager to push a story that was spreading like wildfire on the internet – that Jeff Sessions’ Justice Department was prosecuting a woman who had the audacity to laugh out loud during his confirmation hearing. A woman was indeed arrested and prosecuted during those hearings, but her crime was not laughing, it was creating a totally unacceptable scene upon being asked to leave. Her subsequent actions brought the confirmation hearing to an end and earned her a charge of disorderly conduct (that was eventually dropped). But to NBC News viewers, it was all about the laughter.
After Republicans successfully passed healthcare legislation through the House in May, there were reports that the GOP ordered cases of beer to be rolled into the Capitol for a post-vote celebration. MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough blasted the party as “deplorable,” not bothering to hunt for the facts. As it turned out, beer WAS rolled into the Capitol that day, but it had nothing to do with Republicans or their healthcare vote. Whoops.
On CNN…well, where would we even begin?
Truthfully, this is only the tip of the iceberg. You can pick out fake news story after fake news story and you still won’t get to the real problem, which is the media’s unrelenting bias against this administration, their refusal to EVER paint ANYTHING this president does in a positive light, and their blatant efforts to turn their viewers against him. They have ALL turned the news into a nonstop attack on Trump and the Republican Party, and for that, they ALL deserve to share the Fake News Trophy.
All the same, it can’t be denied that some of these networks are worse than others. Who do YOU think deserves Trump’s Fake News Trophy?
