Woman Blinds Herself to Get Happy
Next time you play a board game like Monopoly, propose to your friends that you play it without rules. No rules whatsoever. Just make the game up as you go along. See how it goes.
Depending on how you feel about Monopoly, you might think this approach to play would be an improvement. More than likely, though, you’re going to find that there’s not much amusement in playing a game where everyone just does whatever comes to their minds. And while most people understand that games need rules to be fun, there’s a lot of people who don’t understand that the same principal applies to life, society, and everything else.
So we get this new liberal idea that the most important thing is to just do what makes you happy. As long as you don’t step on a minority’s toes in the process – an unavoidable fate if you’re white, straight, or Christian – you’re just fine. They’ll even go in and rewrite definitions to make you feel good about your choices. Sure, transgenderism is still labeled a mental disorder in the medical community, but hey, as long as it’s not hurting anyone, they’ll help you achieve your goal of turning yourself into a woman.
All right, so we’ve scratched out that line. What else? Euthanasia? Sure. Birth control for teenagers without the endorsement of the parents? Absolutely. Want to be blind, but you were cursed with sight? Yeah, a doctor can help you out with that.
Wait, what?
It sounds like something you would read in The Onion, but that’s exactly what happened to Jewel Shuping, a North Carolina woman who said she knew from an early age that she was meant to be blind.
“I really feel this is the way I was supposed to be born, that I should have been blind from birth,” Shuping said. “When there’s nobody around you who feels the same way, you start to think that you’re crazy. But I don’t think I’m crazy, I just have a disorder.”
Indeed. Body Integrity Identity Disorder, according to the medical professionals. That’s a condition where people with perfectly healthy bodies believe they would be happier if they were disabled in some way. Shuping, after spending years “blind-simming” with dark glasses and canes, finally found a psychiatrist willing to put drain cleaner in her eyes.
“It hurt, let me tell you. My eyes were screaming and I had some drain cleaner going down my cheek burning my skin,” Shuping says. “All I could think was, ‘I am going blind, it is going to be okay.’ ”
This “treatment” didn’t work right away, but Shuping achieved her lifelong wish of blindness within six months. “I was so happy, I felt that this was who I was supposed to be,” she said.
Gee, where have we heard that before…
It may seem unlikely that doctors will soon be making people blind, cutting off their limbs, and otherwise disabling them with the full authority of the medical community, but is it really that much crazier than what’s already going on? A man undergoes surgery and hormonal injections to become a woman, and we celebrate his courage. But a woman seeks out blindness, and it’s crazy?
We’re making up the rules as we go instead of just following the ones that have governed human society since the beginning of the written word. And instead of actually helping people who are clearly disturbed, we’re giving them whatever their messed-up minds tell them they need. Even with Drano in your eyes, you can see where this is going.
