For years, Christians and conservatives were concerned about the way Biblical sin was being thrust into the mainstream by movies and TV shows. It was one thing to show evil on the big screen, but it was quite another to glorify it. That went for murder, drugs, and sex, but it also went for homosexuality. Still, the idea of “tolerance” was not difficult for most conservatives to grasp. After all, how much of your life are you willing to devote to opposing gay marriage? There comes a point where it’s just easier to throw up your hands. Marry who you want, I’ve got things to do.
But the LGBT movement didn’t stop there. Despite that seductive mantra – Why do you care? – they have proven this year that their aims don’t stop at mere “tolerance.” They don’t want to co-exist with people who see their way of life as an abomination. They demand complete fealty to the rainbow crown, and they are in the middle of an all out war to change the culture forever.
The stories come so fast, it’s hard to keep up with all of them. The florist fined for refusing to provide flowers for a gay wedding. The bakers sued for refusing to bake a gay wedding cake. The teacher in Maine who decided it was appropriate to read her kids a story about a transgender child without asking for parental permission. It is relentless. They are relentless.
The goal was never tolerance. Tolerance was a stepping stone on a much grander path, and it’s one that ends with the criminalization of beliefs that run contrary to the homosexual agenda. Some gay leaders have already proposed taking a church’s non-profit tax status away if they preach or pursue anti-homosexual politics. Few churches would be able to survive such a change, meaning that if this idea catches on, liberals may be able to limit freedom of speech without actually changing the Constitution.
At some point, those who believe that homosexuality is wrong will have to bind themselves to those who believe that people have the right to that opinion. And these two forces will have to unite against the unyielding onslaught from this relatively tiny minority of the population. They have not won through numbers; they have won through tireless, effective propaganda. And conservatives have not been ready with their counter arguments. We wind up defined by the worst of our representatives instead of by those who have a cogent point to make. Some of that is because the media plays favorites, but a lot of it is because we’re just not great about sending out the message.
This war is not lost, but it is a war. And until we get serious about fighting it – until we realize that tolerance was always a lie – then we will be defeated. We simply cannot afford to lose any more ground or fall for any more lies. This is no longer about Christians vs. gays, if it ever was. This is about freedom vs. fascism.
